PATRONS ONLY - TRIPLE PREACHER OVERDRIVE
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's adap of Ennis and Dillon's seminal PREACHER begins to wrap up with the start of season four on Monday night. It's been a messy, frustrating ride, spinning its wheels more often than not, but when it's been good it's been pretty fucking excellent.
Here, then, are several reviews I wrote around the start of the first season in mid 2016.
First off is a piece I wrote to scratch a few itches - it's my favourite, and clearly indicative of the first time I ever clapped ears on Blood, Sweat and Tears' 'Go Down Gamblin''. It takes on the season as a whole, and I think it's a fun little read.
The second effort is a bit of a cheeky stab at selling the (very) blasphemous show to a devout audience, and appeared in Crosslight, the Uniting Church's journal of record. I'm sure everyone involved in the comic and show would have approved.
Finally, I've included a piece I did for Hopscotch Friday, which was an attempt to head the canon-nerds off at the pass with a look at what the show gets right in terms of attitude and tone.
It looks like Season Four's going to take us to Masada, which as you, fellow nerd, probably know equals nukes, "not enough gun" and probably some variation on the cannibalisation of Starr. It's a pity we'll miss out on the sex detectives, Jesus DeSade and all the pervier stuff, but, by and large it's been a pretty admirably gonzo few years of solid telly.
